Day 4 in Kona.

Humuhumunukunukuapua'a
We touched the southernmost part of the entire Unites States. Not being the most creative with place names, it is called South Point. The wind is constant and the deterioration of windturbines seems to be the same. Three rows of dead windmills, with one row of new ones cranking out constant power.
Renewables.
Kurt is an awesome photographer/freediver from O'ahu that took some pictures of me fly fishing. When he finishes editing I hope to show them off.

Chet does the Double Deca.

I used to coach for Team Jet. This is the founder, Chet "the Jet" Blanton. He was planing on doing the Double Deca (yes 20X) Ironman in Mexico. Due to the recent violence, he decided to do it by himself in his hometown of Honolulu. Sorry for his constant caps lock.

This is nuts to me!

Today the 48 miles of swimming starts.

Almost over.

I leave for Hawai'i in two days. I can't believe it. I can't believe that I have been in New Zealand for 3 1/2 months. I can't believe that I have done so much here.
Another amazing day.
I can't believe that I got a job. Everyting in the news is about how bad the economy is. Everyone is being laid off. People can't keep their homes. Obama is having trouble getting his economic stimulus package passed. I am having a great time. I have had an endless summer since... February 2008 when I was in South America. Looks like that will continue until November 2009.
I no longer have to beg for rides with strangers.
I have learned lots of Kiwi slang. I have tested my outdoor gear in all kinds of conditions. I can survive with the gear on my back for about a week. I want very little and need even less. That being said, I love coffee shops that offer free wireless internet. I enjoy Starbucks, but not as much as Rachel. I found a new passion, fly fishing. I have amazing friends all over the world. I enjoy reading other people's blogs. The more I think that I know, the more I realize that I know nothing.
I had a lot of fun learning about NZ wines.
My life is great when I eat a lot. Traveling has made me appreciate good food. If you can't laugh at yourself, life will be miserable.

Good food and good friends.
I have been traveling for over a year, but I don't feel like it is coming to an end. I have learned that I love the beach and the ocean. It is difficult to swim with seals, but easy to outrun them on land. Going home to Kona will be my first vacation in a while. I watched "Into the Wild" and "Slumdog Millionaire" recently. I liked them both. SM imressed me more, but one thing that I remember from ITW:
HAPPINESS IS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED.

Internet usage.

I have internet. It is too hot to be outside. You are warned to avoid the heat from 11-3 everyday. Summer is here. So we watch You Tube videos of Obama.
I also found this in the NY Times about surfing on the North Shore. If you have surfed there, you know it's pretty true. Except the beatings occur quite regularly.

Also, we put together a movie of us with seals.

Here is on eo fmy favorite things that I have seen in a long time. It is Sir Ken Robinson summing up a lot of what I think about our education system. Less drugs for students. Stop telling kids to sit still, let them express themselves creatively. I think that our education system was set up for a world that we no longer live in today. Come on Obama, let's make some more changes.
I like that Obama shut down Guantanamo. People here in New Zealand already like Americans more. There hasn't been much anti-American sentiment, but a lot of Bush bashing.

Anyone know of cheap rental cars on O'ahu?

Honolulu Triathlon

Last Sunday, the Honolulu Triathlon was hosted in my backyard. I competed last year and had a lot of fun. I was hoping to do better than my 2 hr 15 min time from 2006. I signed up on Active.com, it was really easy.
This year I swam 30 seconds faster despite my timing chip coming off halfway through the swim! I had to stop, turn around, grab my chip (that was slowly sinking) and hold it in my hand for the second half of the swim. I feel that I could have been another half minute faster had this not happened.

I knocked 4 minutes off my bike time from last year. This could be because I was using some rental Zipp race wheels. Or maybe my new hero/nemesis Aubrey was pushing me on the bike the whole way. We swam together, then played cat and mouse on the bike, but I knew that he would pull away on the run.
My run this year was 2 minutes faster than last year. I ran a 40 minute 10K which puts my pace at just under 6 mins and 30 secs per mile. I cannot complain about that! Rumor has it that the run was a little longer than 10K so my pace would actually be faster.
I am very happy with my time. This is the fastest Olympic distance triathlon I have ever done.
I think that this is for a few reasons. First and foremost, I have been training more than last year. This year, I am coaching the Team Jet half ironman training group. It has really helped my overall fitness, but I am really nailing my nutrition on all of my races. Bill Burke put on a great race. I would like to thank IT&B for letting me use the Zipp demo wheels. Rudy Project kept me safe and looking good in my Rydon sunglasses and Syton helmet.
Special mahalo to my sponsors go! airlines, Star Bulletin, and look how good our team looked in our uniforms that Tai Graphx helped us design.

So in the end, I did a 2:08! Much better than last year. My blisters are finally healing. If you have any chafing, blisters, or irritated skin, I highly recommend Aquaphor healing ointment.

Look out for me in the Ford Iroman 70.3 Hawai'i race coming up in a week!
